Navajo runner rugs are rare, unusually shaped weavings, characterized by having a length three or four times the width. Antique Navajo runners were likely commission pieces, where a buyer with specific dimensions in mind would ask a trading post proprietor to have a rug made. The traders would usually give such requests to their best weavers, so vintage Navajo runners are often beautifully made. These rugs are uncommon and hard to find - and, as such, are very popular with collectors.
