R267 Germantown Saddle Blanket

In the last decade of the 19th century, Navajo weavers were introduced to remarkably bright and colorful aniline wool yarn dyed in the Germantown community of Philadelphia. The weavers loved the vibrant primary colors and produced many notable rugs from it. The traders of that time, however, preferred softer colors and patterns reminiscent of Persian rugs, so Germantown wool did not take root. Traders notwithstanding, Germantown weavings were essential in the transition period between blankets and floor rugs and have become extremely collectible.
