Paul Vigil Biography

Biography

Description

 Paul Vigil (1933-2018)

Paul Vigil was a member of the Tesuque Pueblo in New Mexico. He is the son of Tomas Vigil (Pan Yo Pin; 1889-1960), self-taught Pueblo artist.  He is also the brother of Tim Vigil (deceased).

Paul displayed artistic talent from an early age, but took the advice to learn a "skill" and was a carpenter on the Navajo reservation for many years. Upon returning to Tesuque in 1980 he returned to his love of watercolor painting. In 1991 he received a 1st place at Indian Market.

His contemporary style is marked by traditional themes. Paul is known for his Pueblo dancers and traditional Pueblo scenes in great detail using watercolor. His work is represented in many major collections in the U.S.A. and abroad. His artwork has been featured in Southwestern Indian Ceremonials by Tom Bahti, a magazine dedicated to Native American ceremonial traditions.
