Antelope Kachina by Hopi carver Wayland Namingha, Sr. The 11 1/2” x 3 1/2” x 2 1/2” kachina on a 5/8” base is carved from cottonwood root in the traditional Hopi manner.
Wayland Namingha (1952-2009) has been carving since 1970s. He is from Kykotsmovi (Third Mesa, AZ). He is known for his traditional kachinas. Wayland has participated in Indian Market 1999-2006. He is the father of kachina carver Wayland Namingha, Jr.
Known as Chop or Sowi-ing this kachina dances to increase its numbers and brings rain. There are many similarities between this spirit and the Deer Kachina, but they can be differentiated by the deer’s antlers or the antelope’s horns. When he appears, he is often accompanied by the Mountain Sheep Kachina, and the Wolf Kachina.
