About the artist
Gordon Crook
(Hopi and Havasupai tribal affiliations)
Gordon Crook is from the Hopi and Havasupai tribe, and resides on the Havasupai reservation at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He is a Kachina carver who specializes in miniatures. He is also an artist who enjoys painting the Kachinas he carves…..intricate, detailed, and pain-staking.
Kachina doll makers are both religious and commercial carvers. Previously, the dolls wouldn’t be signed so as to make the youth believe that they came directly from the kachina spirit rather than from human hands. Nowadays, there are a number of well-known carvers within the community and in larger Arizona. Collectors have helped the kachina emerge from craft/folk object into a respected fine art form; the Heard Museum in Phoenix currently holds the largest collection of this Hopi art form.
