J2011 L Leonard
Sterling silver cuff by Zuni silversmith L. Leonard. The 1” cuff has a row of Sleeping Beauty channel turquoise. The inside is 5” with a 1 1/4” gap.
Channel inlay is one of the most intricate techniques of jewelry making. An inlay base design is made and a rim of silver is soldered around the edges. Silver partitions are put in to form “boxes” for the cut stones to fit into. The Zuni Indians are known for their channel inlay jewelry.
The Sleeping Beauty mine is located near Globe, Arizona. Its turquoise is noted for its solid, light blue color with little or no matrix. Sleeping Beauty turquoise is the favorite of the Zuni Pueblo silversmiths for use in petit point, needlepoint, and inlay jewelry.
