About the artist
Lynn Quam
Lynn Quam is a member of the Johnny Quam and Westika family of carvers. His mother Annie Quam Gasper (d.) and auntie Ellen Quandelacy (d.) were daughters of Johnny Quam (d). His siblings are Rhoda Quam, Nancy Westika, Pernell Gasper (d) and Phillip Pinto (d) Lynn and wife Jayne have passed on their styles to son Curtis.
Lynn is known for his stylized buffalo carvings. He and his wife Jayne Quam, who also is a fetish carver, live at the Zuni Pueblo. Lynn's mother, Annie Gasper Quam, was a well-known fetish carver who died in 2001. His aunt, Ellen Quandelacy who died in 2002, was the matriarch of the well-known Quandelacy family.
Lynn Quam fetishes are an artful merger of Zuni traditional carving and modern sculpture. His Zuni fetish carvings seem Henry Moore like with their graceful, abstract,
smooth lines.
However, Lynn goes beyond Mr. Moore as his fetishes share with us the traditions and spirit of the Zuni Pueblo people. Stone and shell come alive in Lynn Quam’s hands.
