Arnold Lameman
Navajo
Arnold Lameman allows only his hands to be pictured for his work. This being due to the fact that it is not the face of the man that makes the pottery but his hands and only his hands that do the work and creates the amazing pieces of traditional Navajo pottery.
Arnold’s pots are hand coiled and covered with pine sap creating a rough surface. Then he uses a smooth stone and burnishes the pot to smooth out the texture. The darkened areas of her pottery are made when the pottery is fired.
This wedding vase has the Navajo wedding basket design around the entire pot.
Navajo Pottery was traditionally used in cooking. When used for water storage, the pot was covered with pine pitch so it would remain waterproof, thus the distinctive gloss varnish finish found on Navajo Pottery today.
The Pots are often referred to as Medicine Bowls used for ceremonial purposes.
