B172 Hopi Wicker Plaque
Vintage Hopi polychrome wicker plaque. The 13” diameter plaque with a geometric pattern is in good condition with the expected fading.
Wicker baskets are made on the Third Mesa. The willow wicker baskets are known as yungyapu in Hopi. A shallow wicker basket or plaque is called a yungyapngölökpu. It is woven of sumac and rabbit brush.
The vivid designs ae typically red, yellow, and black. The baskets are symbolic of Hopi Life past and present, religion, dances, rainmaking, corn harvest and rites of passage.
