Old Dogon “Walu” mask from Mali. The mask has small horns on the side which depicts a mythical antelope or “Walu.” The figure on top represents Yasa, twin sister and wife of a cultural hero who brought rain from the sky. The Walu mask is used in Walu funeral ceremonies. The mask itself measures 6” x 24”.
More than 70 mask types have been recorded among the Dogon people. The masks are usually in the form of animals from mythology. Their significance is usually understood by high ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of the mask.
