Food Gatherers are a part of the Healing Ceremony. They paint their bodies white to represent the Healing Gods. Their heads are covered with buckskin masks painted blue and the hair is horsehair or black yarn. On the fourth day the gatherers go out to hogans to ask for food to take back to distribute to the people attending the ceremony.
Harrison Begay was born on the Navajo Reservation at White Cone, Az. in 1917. He is a living legend among Indian artists and collectors, and was named an Arizona Living Treasure in 1997. His traditional, flat graphic art depicts the life, animals, and religion of the Navajo people. Any collection of Native American art is not complete without a Harrison Begay painting.
