Michealis Burnham
Navajo/Hopi
Michealis Burnham (Navajo-Hopi, of the Mescalero Apache clan) was born in Tuba City, Arizona in 1968.
He began painting as a child and won his first award when he was 10 years old. His father entered his artwork in the Navajo Nation Fair, and he won 1st Place in the Juvenile Division. The award included a $75.00 check. Since then he had won many awards and recognition for his work.
Michealis said he enjoyed the challenge of learning new techniques and taking his art to a whole new level. He was proud to type his traditions with contemporary ways of life today. He enjoyed the challenge of using colors that contrast with each other and enjoys blending the colors together as one. He loved the use of lines and the ability to use different strokes and techniques of the pen which allowed him to express his mental images by the use of forms and shapes.
“People always explain art as their way of expressing their feelings or making a statement. I would like the art to strike ones feelings or emotions when viewing it and as a conversation piece or an avenue by which I may meet new people. Hoping that people who enjoy the art remember how they felt when they see the art and remember how it changed their feelings or emotions at that time.”
Michealis died April 3, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona.
