The Transitional period refers to the time when weavers transitioned from weaving predominantly wearing blankets to rugs at the suggestion of the traders. Traders recognized the demand for Navajo rugs in the eastern USA. The Transitional Period was prior to when regional styles became the norm. Navajo weavers had "carte blanche" as far as designs.
