About the Fetish Pot:

The representation of the pot is to appease the spirit of the fetish and keep it happy. This harmony may be transferred to the owner bringing protection and good fortune from the four directions of mother earth.

About the Fetish Pot: The Zuni Fetish Pot is a spiritual object for the Zuni people. Each stone encrusted pot (usually with turquoise) will have several small fetish carvings on its exterior and another inside the pot, with a cornmeal offering. Fetishes are generally animals and occasionally supernatural spirits, each of which helps the Zuni people.

The bear, most frequent fetish to appear on pots, has the characteristics of strength, courage, introspection and healing powers. The inside of the fetish pot becomes the home of sacred fetishes.

Sometimes medicines are stored there but always there is a corn meal offering to sustain the fetishes. Guards inhabit the outside. The bear, most frequent fetish to appear on pots, has the characteristics of strength, courage, introspection and healing powers. Most pots have holes in the sides for fetish spirits to come in and out.

The Zuni people believe that if a person is in a difficult situation, he or she can offer a prayer to the bear asking for additional strength. If the fetish believes the person is sincere, its spirit leaves the pot and enters the individual’s spirit through his or her mouth. Once the fetish has provided the needed strength, its spirit leaves the individual the same way it entered and returns to its home in the pot.
