About the artist

Paul J. Begay

Paul J. Begay, Navajo silversmith, was born and raised in Rehoboth, New Mexico, a small Dutch community near Gallup, circa 1965.

Paul began making jewelry at age 32, learning skills from the local Zuni artists. He also worked with renowned Navajo smith Harry Morgan for some years during the time when Harry ran a production studio and employed other smiths to help him meet demand for his "old pawn" style jewelry. Paul has been working independently for several years and has retained Harry's stylistic element of applying an "old pawn" patina to his pieces, while developing his own style based on traditional Navajo designs. He has won many awards for his traditionally made jewelry using only natural turquoise and coral stones.

His work is signed “PJ Begay.”
