About the artist
Leonard Nez
Navajo silversmith Leonard Nez from Canoncito, New Mexico has been an active silversmith since 1980. He says "I want each piece to be better than the last. I do my own designs, the ones that speak to me. Leonard has a silver bowl with lid and stand on permanent display at the Smithsonian.
Leonard learned the art of making jewelry from his wife, Marion. Leonard started out from 19 to 26 years old as a heavy equipment operator. . His wife Marian and her family were silversmiths and he was inspired by them. He has been producing since the 1980’s. Leonard is known for incorporating both a contemporary and traditional style into his jewelry. He is a spiritual person who says his designs come to him as if in a whisper.
Well known artist “Gibson Nez” was a great mentor and role model. He took Leonard under his wing and called him brother, even though they share the same last name they are not related.
In Leonard’s spare time he loves to rope in the Rodeos on the weekend. He even lost his right thumb while roping, but it has not affected his great work. He enjoys all that he does in creating his jewelry. He believes it all comes from his HEART!
