About the Artist
Zuni silversmith Carmelita Simplicio was born in the Zuni Pueblo in 1939. She was most active in jewelry-making during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
She is a member of the renowned Simplicio silversmith family of the Zuni Pueblo. Master jeweler Dan Simplicio (1917 - 1969) introduced Turquoise nuggets set in a sterling silver leaf design elements in Zuni jewelry, and the younger members of his family have continued the tradition. What distinguishes Carmelita's work are the curved leaves with stamp work and the scalloped bevel edges. Her use of nugget stone settings and leaves makes it similar to Navajo silver-work.
