About the artist
Lewis Malie
Lewis Malie inherited his talent from his relatives. He is from a family of fetish carvers, a part of the extended Laate family. He is the nephew of renowned carvers Max, Willard and the late Pernell Laate and cousin to carver Derrick Kaamasee.
After finishing high school, Lewis was unemployed, so he decided to purchase the tools to do fetish carving. Max and Pernell gave him lots of tips.
Lewis prefers to work in antler, usually carving birds. He prefers antler because it is easy to carve and rocks are “too dusty.” He is known for his realistic bird and animal fetishes carved in antler.
Some of his ideas for fetishes come from watching his cousin, Derrick Kaamasee, carve fetishes.
