Description

Plains Indian breastplate. The plate is made of pipe stems which were a trade item.  It was a decorative piece, and mainly worn for celebrations, dances and victory ceremonies. It is decorated with white deerskin fringe, colored beads, brass beads and a shell. 

The shell was another trade item in which the circle represents Sun Power.  The cowrie shell in the middle of the large shell was a favorite decoration of the Plains Indians.
